UACCB Welcome Center employees visited the Workforce Training Center on Friday, June 5, for a hands-on look at the college’s welding program.
Welding faculty members Loyd Barry and Justin Holman, part of UACCB’s Career and Workforce Education division, hosted the visit. The experience gave the Welcome Center team a chance to tour the welding lab, learn more about the training students receive, and experience a small part of what students encounter in the program.
During the visit, Welcome Center employees put on welding helmets, gloves, and other protective gear before physically trying some of the skills students practice as part of their hands-on training.
For employees who regularly speak with prospective students, the experience provided a closer look at the program, the learning environment, and the hands-on nature of welding instruction at UACCB.
“We are glad they came out to see what the students are actually learning over here,” said Justin Holman, Welding Instructor. “That will help them inform the students, as they have a better understanding after Friday.”
For the Welcome Center team, the visit offered a closer look at both the technical training and the faculty behind the program.
“I feel much more equipped to talk about our welding program to prospective students and to prepare them for what to expect from their hands-on training,” said Caitlyn Croft, Navigator. “Listening to our instructors talk about their passion and seeing them in action was such a valuable experience. Also, it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had at work!”
The experience helped connect the employees who often serve as a student’s first point of contact with the faculty and programs that help prepare UACCB students for the workforce.
