Career Planning & Development

Choosing a Major

Choosing a major is not always an easy task. There are so many career fields to choose from and many of us have multiple interests and skills to support a variety of choices. Rather than guess at what might work well, a career assessment provides a good indication of the career fields that a student is best suited to based on responses to assessment questions. The Counseling & Career Services Office provides a variety of career assessments for students.

These include the:

  • Kuder Career Planning System
  • Self-Directed Search
  • Career Clusters Interest Survey

The Kuder Career Planning System consists of three assessments (interest, skills, and values) which take approximately twenty minutes each to complete. Once finished, the student may access a wealth of valuable information on its website to research further careers he/she may be interested in, including details such as required education and training, income, specific job duties and many others. Kuder divides the thousands of jobs available in the job market into sixteen career clusters to help students in determining their particular path. These clusters are listed on the website along with brief descriptions and employment opportunities for each of the pathways given.

The Self-Directed Search, developed by John Holland, Ph.D., is a paper/pencil career assessment that takes approximately forty minutes to complete. Students will complete the assessment booklet and obtain a three-letter occupational code, or Summary Code. This code is then used to locate suitable occupations in the occupational classification booklet. The assessment was developed based on the theory that most people can be categorized as one of six personality types. These include Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.

The Career Clusters Interest Survey is a career guidance tool that allows students to respond to questions and identify the top three Career Clusters of interest based on their responses. This pencil/paper survey takes about fifteen minutes to complete and works along with the Career Clusters website to provide students a resource for additional research.

Researching Labor Market Information

The Counseling & Career Services office is available to assist students with the acquisition of labor market information for the area in which they plan to seek employment. This would include such information as salary, job outlook, job availability, lists of employers, and much more.

Conducting a Job Search

The Counseling & Career Services office keeps a database of all open positions advertised on the UACCB campus for students and graduates including part-time, full-time, and work study positions. Access to this system (Career Corner) is available to all UACCB students. Please contact the Counseling & Career Services Coordinator for assistance in accessing Career Corner.

Preparing for Interviews

The Counseling & Career Services office is available, by appointment, to provide practice interviews with debriefing and interview tips. In addition, the Counseling & Career Services Coordinator can assist in resume writing, whether this is the first resume a student has ever written or simply an update to reflect current education and experience.

Annual Career Fairs

The Counseling & Career Services office at UACCB hosts an annual Career Fair open to all students, graduates and community members in the spring semester. This is a great opportunity to begin networking with area employers to find out what they look for in an ideal employee. Many of the participating employers have immediate openings that they will be hiring for as well. Don't miss this opportunity to get your name out there and make a great first impression!

Workshop Series

The Counseling & Career Services office provides a variety of career development workshops designed to meet the needs of students. These include such topics as:

  • How to Conduct an Effective Job Search
  • How to Write a Resume That Gets Noticed
  • How to Ensure a Successful Interview

These workshops are offered free of charge each semester to all students, graduates and community members. Please contact the Counseling & Career Services Coordinator for specific dates and times each semester.

Disability Support Services

How Can Students Request Disability Services
UACCB provides reasonable accommodations and services to students qualifying for such assistance under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Vocational Rehabilitation Act. Students must notify instructors and contact the Counseling & Career Services Office EACH semester they wish to receive accommodations. A Letter of Accommodation, a form to assist with notifying instructors, is available from the Counseling & Career Services Coordinator. We encourage students to contact instructors as soon as possible each semester during office hours to discuss such matters in confidence.
