Rosa Sanchez
When Rosa Sanchez moved to Batesville with her family from the west coast she didn't know what to expect. The area was smaller than what she was accustomed to and she knew no one.
"I went to work full time when we came to Batesville. I didn't know that there were other options out there for me. I realized I wanted to do more than just have a job. I wanted a career I loved."
She had always dreamed of being an architect, yet up to that point she wasn't sure how to make that dream come true. Spanish was Rosa's native language. The language barrier combined with new surroundings made exploring a new career field difficult, especially a career requiring a college degree.
Hearing about UACCB Rosa decided to check it out. There she found a new beginning toward her dream and a life beyond her expectations.
"My English speaking skills were low. But when I needed help the Adult Education department and tutoring center provided support. The tutoring center also introduced me to other students which helped me connect and not feel so isolated. "
Being the only person in her family to attend college Rosa faced the unknown. She continued to work full time while attending classes. It was hectic but "UACCB provided the tools for me to be successful. If I could give anyone advice who starts college it would be to look for help the very first day."
While a UACCB student, she also worked on campus as a math tutor.
"People just loved her," said Dennis Broadwater, the tutoring center director who hired Rosa. "She was able to connect with other students, especially those who struggled with communication issues. She was a great role model and we were lucky to have her."
Rosa transferred to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she continues to strive for big things. Her dream of becoming an architect is still alive and well.
"At UACCB I was given an opportunity and for that I'll always be thankful."
