First Generation Celebration Sept. 19-20
The TRIO/Student Support Services program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville will host the inaugural First Generation Celebration Sept. 19-20 in the student commons in Independence Hall. Activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
The event celebrates first-generation college students, meaning those who are the first in their family to attend college. Rep. James Sturch will speak both days. Independence County Judge Robert Griffin signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 19-20 First Generation Celebration days in an effort to raise support and awareness for first-generation college students.
“All of our vice chancellors as well as our chancellor at UACCB are first-generation college students, and I think that’s very important for our students to see,” said Ronda McLelland, director of TRIO/SSS. “We’ll have an informal mix and mingle where students will have the opportunity to talk with faculty, staff and administrators who are also first-generation students and share their stories.”
Light refreshments will be served. All first-generation students including faculty, staff and administrators are invited to participate in a photo on the front lawn in front of the Main Campus Building Sept. 19 after Rep. Sturch speaks. Buttons will be provided for first-generation students, faculty and staff in attendance. For more information, call 870-612-2024.
