Henry scholarship to be available this fall at UACCB

BATESVILLE – The Paul and Virginia Henry Endowed Scholarship will be available this fall to a student enrolled at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, announced Hayes Olson, director of development and events.

The Paul and Virginia Henry Endowed Scholarship will pay tuition costs based on the total credit hours the student is enrolled in at UACCB. Eligibility requirements are a B average on previous college or high school work and a demonstrated financial need.

“Paul and I have both been interested in education, and we felt a real need for UACCB because students attending a two-year institution don’t seem to have the opportunities for scholarships that four-year college students have,” said Virginia Henry.

“We like to help young folks be able to go to school and get an education,” Paul Henry added.

The Depression years taught Virginia and Paul Henry to appreciate the value of hard work and an education.

“I graduated from Batesville High School and went to Arkansas College (now Lyon College), and transferred to Ouachita College, now Ouachita Baptist University, where I met Paul,” Virginia Henry said.  “Paul is a graduate of Ouachita College and a business major. I studied English and drama.  I worked with daddy (J.K. Southerland) and Paul in building the poultry industry in this area.”

Today, Paul Henry describes himself as a retired, self-employed person who worked with Southerland in building the poultry food industry during its infancy.  He continued with the business when it merged with Banquet Foods and when it was purchased by ConAgra Foods.  Later, he retired from ConAgra Foods.  He is a member of several businesses and fraternal organizations and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Virginia Henry enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.  “I have been a real vagabond traveling with the kids,” she said.  She traveled with her three granddaughters to see Mt. McKinley, took the oldest granddaughter to Russia, and accompanied the middle granddaughter to Greece.

The Henry’s have visited China and Japan and most of the countries in Europe.  “I love Mexico City,” Virginia Henry said.  “I love the ruins.  Did you know that Mexico City had a university in 1553?”

Virginia Henry is a board member for the Old Independence Regional Museum and is on the President’s Council at Lyon College.  She is a member of the First Baptist Church.

The Henry’s have a long relationship with UACCB.  In 2003, they provided the patio furniture for the Adult Education building and most recently they helped sponsor a trip to Europe.
